Regardless of our gender and orientation, we all naturally have masculine and feminine energy on a sliding scale that can be expressed in strong (mature, healthy) or weak (immature, unhealthy) ways.
Here, “masculine” doesn’t equate to “male” or a man. “Feminine” doesn’t mean “female” or a woman. Straight, cis-gender women tend to naturally have more feminine energy on average though; and men more often have more masculine energy. Regardless of how we were born or identify, we all can access aspects of both energies.
Strong feminine energy shows up in traits such as emotional intelligence, nurturing, body wisdom, intuition and connection to nature. Masculine energy helps us connect to aspects of ourselves like logic, competition, physical power, direction and clarity. We move between these energies to different extents depending on the environment, tasks and people we find ourselves with. You can read more about strong and weak masculine and feminine energy traits here.
With awareness and practice we can consciously choose to show up more in our strong masculine and feminine energy as the need arises. For example, when playing competitive sports or negotiating a deal, we can switch into masculine mode. To make a decision that’s right for our long-term well-being however; then connecting to the feelings in our body and intuition, as well as being able to read people with high EQ from feminine energy, is useful.
Places and societies can be more masculine or feminine-dominant too. Energy polarity expert and author David Deida notes that nurturing, slower-paced and nature-rich places like Hawaii are more connected to feminine energy. Whereas large, hustle-bustle, capitalist, concrete-covered cities like New York exude more masculine energy.
Overall, modern society has valued and encouraged the development of masculine more than strong feminine energy traits. This has included the dominance of weak masculine energy symptoms in people and cultures; such as over-dominance, aggression, or logic without empathy.
For example, it’s the norm that we:
I’m sure you can think of other examples too.
I grew up in a British household that struggled to discuss or show much emotion. And in a busy city that’s low on nature and high on pollution. My first job was as an accountant; where analysis and competition were valued more than being who we really were. A friend was once called “one unit of resource” in a work email. With the rise of AI, it’s no wonder robotic jobs like these are going to have to evolve.
Over years, I’ve built a better connection to my strong feminine energy. For example:
Connecting to and expressing my true natural level of feminine energy has had a profound impact on my joy and confidence. As well as the experiences, love and community I attract into my life. I feel brave tapping into feminine energy superpowers – like intuition, fierce love, creativity and strong communication – instead of relying on girlish charms or a brittle masculine shell to get by.
I thrive being who I really am. It also helps feminine people attract mature masculine partners who feel relaxed around secure feminine energy.
“Only when the Eagle (feminine) and the Condor (masculine) fly together, will there be peace in the world.”
~ Ancient Indigenous prophecy, summarized by Nadia Tidona
On a global scale, I believe there are many issues that could be remedied with a better masculine-feminine energy balance. This doesn’t mean the feminine ought to take over; but for us to develop and revere both sides of ourselves as opposite but equally important.
An energetic re-balancing could help us recognise, respect and elect more empathetic and conscious political and business leaders. They might value thriving people and environment; more than personal power and winning at all costs.
Personally, I don’t want humans to die out within a couple of generations from the collapse of our ecosystems due to climate change, pollution and the non-circular use of resources. Creating 400 million tonnes of toxic waste products a year, that cannot be safely returned to our global resource pool. Or for us to be taken out by out-of-control testosterone-and-technology-fuelled wars.
Having to move to another planet (e.g. Mars) to live in a mall-like environment – because we’ve destroyed the one we’ve evolved on since the start of life on Earth – doesn’t appeal. We can only hope that egoic dictators and business leaders – who start wars and pillage resources – become extinct like dinosaurs: before they take the rest of us down with them.
Humans may have evolved to act as and be attracted to more dominant, testosterone-fueled individuals when resources were scarce over generations. Today the world collectively has abundant resources; and the technology available for billions of people to survive and thrive. I believe we need to evolve in a new direction ASAP.
An iPhone’s operating system updates at a much faster rate (over months) than our nervous system does (over millennia). Evolving our awareness and consciousness in real time however, in the generations alive today, is necessary for survival.
We may not be able to annually upgrade our bodies (or hardware) like Apple devices do. But we can choose to evolve and share good ideas using the technology and wisdom we’ve created. We can choose to do this with the education tools we have available. We can step back to look at the bigger picture and continuously question how we might do things better.
For society to value the feminine as much as we do the masculine; it starts with each of us. Including you. Connecting to our strong feminine energy (and supporting others in theirs) leads as an example of what positive feminine energy looks like.
For example, women from Israel and Palestine recently came together, peacefully “fostering understanding and promoting reconciliation”. They are demanding an end to inhumane suffering and asking for more seats at political decision-making tables.
More and more conflicting personal, local, and global issues keep rearing their heads. As if we descend further into how much the dysfunctional energy imbalance isn’t working across our planet.
It’s time for a femifesto. For us to rise into our feminine power and reclaim the strength, empathy and connection it brings. Also embracing our masculinity as it ascends into a more evolved version. Frankly, before we go extinct.
In the next article of this series, I’ll share what worked for me, and others, to tap into our strong feminine energy. Regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
Part two could help you if you’d like to be in touch with your feminine superpowers. If you want to better understand feminine people; or be more attractive to masculine partners. Also, to bring balance to the societal issues of masculine over-dominance listed above.
